General Model Information:
BMW 3 Series
The present fifth-generation ("E90" in BMW speak) sedan and wagon debuted for 2006 with a complete makeover. Originally, the model designations were 325i and 330i. The former was powered by a 215-hp, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, while the used BMW 330i features a 255-hp version of the same engine. The current crop of model designations and gasoline-powered engine lineup appeared with the redesigned coupe and convertible for 2007. That year also saw the coupe get all-wheel drive for the first time. For 2009, the BMW 335d and its diesel engine became available, while xDrive debuted as the name for all-wheel-drive models (replacing 328xi and 335xi).
The highly regarded fourth-generation ("E46") BMW 3 Series debuted as a sedan for the 1999 model year. The coupe, convertible and wagon models fell in line a year later in 2000.

BMW 5 Series
The present fifth-generation BMW 5 Series debuted for 2004. For 2004 and '05, it was offered only in sedan form and only with rear-wheel drive. There were two six-cylinder models, the 184-hp 525i and 225-hp 530i, along with a top-line V8 version, the 325-hp 545i. Buyers looking at six-cylinder models would be wise to focus on 2006 and newer models, as the '06 model year brought a new pair of 3.0-liter sixes, resulting in a more spirited 215-hp BMW 525i and a 255-hp 530i. The V8 sedan was already quick, but it, too, received a new engine, a 360-hp 4.8-liter, and became the 550i.
BMW 6 Series
The current BMW 6 Series debuted for 2004. Originally, it came equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 rated at 325 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque and was known as the BMW 645Ci. The name change to 650i (minus the "C") and update to the current 4.8-liter V8 occurred for 2006. Driving characteristics between the 645Ci and 650i are very similar: The smaller V8 shared the 4.8-liter's athletic character but had a slightly less vigorous power band. If you find a well-kept used BMW 645Ci, you won't find it lacking from a performance standpoint.
BMW 7 Series
With the exception of 2002 when only a V8 was offered, the fourth-generation BMW 7 Series lineup always included sophisticated eight- and 12-cylinder engines paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 745i and 745Li sold from 2002-'05 were equipped with a 325-hp 4.4-liter V8, while the use BMW 750i and 750Li that succeeded them had a 360-hp 4.8-liter V8. The 750s were slightly heavier, so performance was about the same as for the 745s.
BMW Alpina B7
Produced from 2007-'08, the BMW Alpina B7 competed in the exclusive performance luxury sedan segment. Offered in one trim level and only with the 7 Series' shorter wheelbase, the Alpina B7 came standard with 21-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, a body kit with integrated rear spoiler, steering-wheel-mounted shift buttons and a few aesthetic upgrades in the cabin. Other standard equipment was identical with that on the ultra-luxurious 760Li, which meant just about every sumptuous and high-tech feature that BMW could find in its bag of tricks.
