General Model Information:

Ford Explorer
Considering that the Explorer has been one of the most popular vehicles over the last two decades, shoppers for used SUVs can be quite choosy in terms of getting the configuration and condition they desire. The Ford Explorer is currently in its third generation, which dates back to the 2002 model year. Earlier Explorers of this generation did not vary much in terms of features or performance, though 2004 and newer models have more available safety features. For 2006, a substantial update took place that included revised styling inside and out, an improved frame, enhanced safety systems and the addition of the current, more powerful V8 (the previous V8 produced 239 hp). More recent Explorers benefited from the arrival of the Sync music/phone interface (2008) and a revised navigation system (2009). .

Ford Expedition
The current, third-generation Expedition is the product of a major refresh conducted for 2007. Since then, minor changes have occurred. The King Ranch trim level debuted for 2008, while the Sync electronics interface was gained for '09. The second-generation Expedition was introduced for the 2003 model year. Compared to the current generation, the styling was different and a less stiff chassis resided underneath. Ride and handling were not as good, and the standard automatic transmission had four gears. There were also fewer available features, including three-row side curtain airbags. However, compared to its predecessor, this Expedition was a vast improvement -- specifically in regards to driving dynamics, thanks to its independent rear suspension. It was also the first SUV to offer power fold-into-the-floor rear seats.

Ford F-150
The previous-generation F-150 was introduced for the 2004 model year, and Ford's goal was to make it the most advanced F-Series pickup ever. It was available in a variety of trim levels and body styles. The XL was the basic truck and the STX offered a few additional features, but the volume-selling XLT provided the best bang for the buck. You'll also encounter the off-road-oriented FX4 trim level, the sporty FX2 (in 2007), the luxurious Lariat, the even plusher Lariat Limited (for 2008) and the thematic King Ranch and Harley-Davidson editions. During this truck's run, available engines included a 202-hp 4.2-liter V6, a 231-hp 4.6-liter V8 and a 300-hp 5.4-liter V8. In 2007, the 4.6-liter V8 got a power upgrade to 248 hp. Harley-Davidson models had a supercharged V8 that cranked out 450 hp. This used Ford is a excellent choice for a truck buyer.

Ford Mustang
Completely redesigned for 2005, the Ford Mustang moved to an all-new chassis after a 25-year run on the late-'70s-era Fox-body platform. Ford's pony car still used rear-wheel drive and a fairly basic solid-axle rear suspension, but ride quality and handling were more precisely controlled than on any previous Mustang. The car's styling paid homage to the famed Mustangs of the 1960s with its big grille, round headlights, high-mounted foglights and fastback roof line. The classic motif continued inside where an old-school dash, steering wheel and instrumentation were integrated into a more modern design. Many materials were low in quality, however, as Ford sought to keep the price tag low as well. Both coupe and convertible body styles were offered in V6 and GT form. The V6 was the same unappealing one that is presently offered, while the GT's V8 then made 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, while a five-speed automatic was optional. To many a well maintained used Ford Mustang is considered a classic.

Ford Ranger
Introduced for 1983, the Ranger started life as a standard-cab, four-cylinder compact pickup truck with a choice of two bed lengths. The mid-'80s saw the introduction of the extended-cab body style known as the "SuperCab," which offered jump seats that were best left to kids. The Ranger continued through the early '90s with minor upgrades to the powertrains and small cosmetic changes until 1993, when the truck was completely revamped. As Ford's popular small pickup approached the new millennium, features such as a five-speed automatic transmission (for V6 models) and rack-and-pinion steering were added in an effort to keep the Ranger competitive. Although it received a freshening in 2001 that brought more power and a serious off-road version called the FX4, the Ford Ranger fell behind rivals from Toyota and Nissan that benefited from full redesigns a few years later. Up until 2009, a 3.0-liter V6 was available.
