General Model Information:
Mazda 3
The original Mazda 3 was produced from 2004-'09. Much of the current car's underpinnings were carried over from its predecessor, so both new and used Mazda models should offer similar driving dynamics. The original base 3 featured the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as today, although in its first two years in production, it lacked variable valve timing. The upgraded inline-4 displaced 2.3 liters, however, and its output was 156 hp. A four-speed automatic was optional with the 2.3-liter for 2004 and '05, and was replaced by a five-speed auto thereafter. From 2006 and later, cars sold in California-emissions states were partial zero emissions vehicle certified.

Mazda 5
The Mazda 5 was introduced for the 2006 model year. The range-topping Grand Touring model was not offered that year (it dawned for '07), nor were its many luxury niceties. For 2008, the Mazda 5 received revised front and rear styling and a new center control panel. Electroluminescent gauges were added, along with rear seat air vents and controls, additional flip-down armrests and an auxiliary audio jack.
Mazda 6
Launched for the 2003 model year, the first-generation Mazda 6 was initially available only as a sedan, while a four-door hatchback and a wagon joined the lineup for 2004. There were two basic trim levels: i and s. The used Mazda 6 i is powered by a reasonably gutsy 160-hp four-cylinder engine mated to either a manual or an automatic transmission. The s model upped the performance ante with its 3.0-liter V6 -- also available with either a manual transmission or an automatic -- though this engine lagged behind the bigger V6s in competing models.
Mazda CX-7
The Mazda CX-7 was introduced for 2007. There have only been minor equipment additions since, with models from 2009 and newer gaining a standard auxiliary audio jack on all trims, and Bluetooth and satellite radio added to the Technology package.
Mazda CX-9
The CX-9 was introduced for 2007. In its debut year, the CX-9 was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that made 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. Despite being replaced by the current 3.7-liter engine for '08, the original CX-9 was hardly lacking for power, so we wouldn't discourage anyone from purchasing a used Mazda CX-9.
In addition, the power rear hatch feature on the Grand Touring model was unavailable at launch and was a late availability option, so it may be hard to find on 2007 models. For '09, Bluetooth became standard across the board while a few other features were added to the Grand Touring trim and options packages.
